Travel Inspiration

The Secret Season for Smarter Travel

Summer may be winding down, but that doesn't mean travel season is over. In many destinations, fall brings a combination that's hard to resist: fewer crowds, comfortable temperatures and opportunities for better value.

This in-between period is known as shoulder season, and it can be one of the smartest times of year to travel.

Portugal After the Summer Rush

Portugal is especially tempting once the busiest summer weeks are behind us. Imagine wandering Lisbon's historic neighborhoods, exploring Porto and the Douro Valley, or lingering along the coast without quite as much peak-season bustle.

If Portugal has been sitting on your someday list, this is a good time to start turning someday into an actual itinerary.

Worth Knowing

Airline Schedules Are Changing

Several major U.S. airlines are adjusting future flight schedules as higher fuel costs put pressure on operating expenses.

American, United and Southwest have all discussed reducing planned capacity, particularly on less-profitable routes later in 2026 and into 2027.

What does that mean for travelers?

If you've already booked a trip several months in advance, don't assume your original flight schedule will remain untouched.

Airlines routinely make schedule adjustments, but periods of broader network changes make it especially important to keep an eye on your reservation.

Felder Travel Tip: When an airline makes a significant schedule change, you may have more options than simply accepting the replacement flight. Before clicking "Accept," check what alternatives are available.

Travel Tip of the Week

Don't Book a Connection That's Technically Possible

A booking system may allow a connection, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a connection you'll enjoy making.

The minimum connection time doesn't account for everything real travel can throw at you: a late departure, a distant gate, immigration, security lines or an airport you've never navigated before.

When possible, give yourself some breathing room, especially when connecting internationally or through a large unfamiliar airport.

Sometimes an extra hour at the airport is much better than an unexpected extra night there.
