Travel Inspiration

Costa Rica: A Winter Escape with a Little More Adventure

Lush Costa Rica rainforest and volcanic landscape

When winter starts settling in at home, Costa Rica offers a very different kind of season.

Think rainforest, volcanic landscapes, wildlife, waterfalls, beaches on two coasts, and warm weather that makes it easy to trade heavy coats for hiking shoes or a swimsuit.

Costa Rica can work especially well for travelers who want more than a traditional beach vacation. One trip might combine time near a volcano or rainforest with a few relaxing days along the Pacific coast, while another might focus on wildlife, wellness, or outdoor adventure.

Guanacaste, on Costa Rica's Pacific side, combines beaches, tropical scenery, resorts, and access to outdoor experiences, making it an appealing option for travelers who want relaxation without giving up the possibility of adventure.

Worth Knowing

Holiday Airfares Are Climbing

Travelers planning Thanksgiving and Christmas trips may want to pay closer attention to airfare now rather than relying on the idea that prices will automatically fall later.

Holiday travel periods are typically some of the most expensive times of the year to fly, and travelers with fixed dates have fewer opportunities to adjust their schedules around lower fares.

Felder Travel Tip: If your holiday dates are fixed, start comparing fares sooner rather than later. Also compare two one-way tickets instead of automatically assuming a round-trip ticket will always be less expensive.

Passport & Visa Watch

Before You Connect Through Another Country, Check the Transit Rules

Verified as of: October 18, 2026

A traveler may not need a visa for their final destination and still encounter document requirements while connecting through another country.

Transit requirements can depend on citizenship, airport, terminal changes, connection length, whether baggage must be collected and rechecked, and whether the traveler must pass through immigration.

This becomes especially important when booking international itineraries with separate tickets or multiple airlines.

Felder Travel Tip: Before booking an international connection, check entry and transit requirements for every country on the itinerary, not just the final destination.

ETIAS Still Isn't Open

Verified as of: October 18, 2026

Europe's Entry/Exit System, or EES, is already operating.

ETIAS is the separate travel authorization planned for visa-exempt travelers visiting participating European countries.

ETIAS is still not operational, and travelers should not use third-party websites claiming they can process an ETIAS application before the official system begins accepting applications.

Felder Travel Reminder: When ETIAS officially opens, Felder Travel will share updated information and official application guidance.

Travel requirements can change without notice. Information above was verified as of October 18, 2026. Passport, visa, entry, and transit requirements may vary based on citizenship, itinerary, and individual circumstances. Travelers should verify current requirements before departure.

Travel Tip

Sometimes Two One-Way Tickets Beat a Round Trip

Most travelers instinctively search for round-trip airfare first, but that is not always the least expensive option.

Combining separate one-way tickets can sometimes reduce the total fare or provide better flight times, especially when different airlines offer stronger pricing in each direction.

Felder Travel Tip: Compare the complete trip cost before booking. Separate tickets can save money, but baggage fees, seat fees, cancellation rules, and protection during delays or missed connections may differ between airlines.

Travel Trend

The Mediterranean Is Becoming Less Seasonal

Mediterranean cruising has traditionally been concentrated heavily in spring, summer, and early fall, but cruise lines are increasingly adding sailings outside the traditional season.

For travelers more interested in sightseeing, food, history, and culture than swimming weather, traveling during the quieter months can offer a very different experience.

Off-season Mediterranean travel can mean fewer crowds, cooler temperatures, and opportunities to experience popular European destinations without peak-summer conditions.
